Lithuania's departure

Many events taking place in Lithuania in recent months alone are linked by one idea – Lithuania's departure. It is becoming free from Russia in terms of energy.

The Energy Umbilical Cord

Energy can be called a kind of umbilical cord that makes the Baltic States dependent on Russia. In addition to gas, the country is connected to it by an electric ring, that is, an organic element of the UES. It gives countries the opportunity to easily cover the lack of electricity. Due to this reality, everyone perceives this connection as a scarecrow with a political burden. In simple terms, the Balts are afraid, and not without reason, that the gas could be used for blackmail purposes.

Lithuania has the most developed this complex. There are many reasons for this. First of all, the rest of the Baltic countries have strengths that make them take themselves into account. Estonia can produce shale gas. There is a gas storage facility in Latvia that is used by Gazprom to create reserves. Secondly, Estonia and Latvia are able to provide themselves with electricity. Thirdly, gasoline can be purchased everywhere. Finally, they don't need clean oil.

Lithuania, which has several oil terminals, cannot say the same. Her gas is only Russian. After one of the power plants was shut down, it became an electric energy supplier. It is worth considering the political nature of the Lithuanian government, which is characterized by bullying. That is why Lithuania, having gained independence, initiated many projects aimed at gaining energy independence from Russia.

Lithuania stepped on the gas

The desire to gain independence from Gazprom prompted the creation of several important projects. So recently, the terminal began to be used, where liquefied gas was received. Such a terminal has the shape of a ship. It is called Independence. Ships are approaching it. The device transfers gas to a special tank using underwater pipes.

The Brussels government believed that similar facilities should be built by the rest of the Baltic countries. Finland was supposed to help them. But the countries could not decide on the construction site. In the end, Lithuania decided to do everything by itself.

The Lithuanian government's ambitions were supported by a conflict with Gazprom representatives over the energy package. In reality, this meant that the Lithuanian gas production company would turn into a gas pipeline operator. It also merged with the electric grid operator into an enterprise. As a result, Gazprom no longer needed to supply gas to Lithuania. A Lithuanian state-owned company started supplying gas.

Naturally, Gazprom was alarmed by this, and he tried to resist. He didn't like the fact that Lithuania wanted to get ahead of everyone. As if in retaliation, gas prices were lowered for the rest of the Baltic states, while for Lithuania they remained the same.
